A Trip without a Laptop + Opportunity

There once was an author who forgot how to live without her laptop. She began to feel like she needed to have it with her all the time…just in case. And that small laptop became a weight that reminded her all the time what she SHOULD be doing.

Then this author realized she was exceptionally bad at taking a break. Even when she traveled overseas she had a job: teaching in study abroad, giving a presentation at a conference, or leading a group of young adults.

Late last month, she made a last minute decision to leave that laptop behind…

and she exhaled…

At one of her favorite escapes…

With some of her favorite people.

However, she did have her phone, so she played with Instagram reels. Her family loves riding their bikes around the island — it’s 8.2 miles. That became this fun reel (Is it fun if she calls it fun?):

After two days on the island as a family, (there were just a few of them!)…

Everyone went their separate ways. Three cars went across the bridge to the Upper Peninsula and then down into Wisconsin and beyond, while the last car continued home to Indiana. On the way that car stopped at Sleeping Bear Dunes, where the author took these photos.

When she arrived home, she was ready to get back to work, refreshed from a week away. Now her hope is to remember the joy of a real break from work.

I know you’ve guessed the author is me. Do you find it hard to walk away from work too? What do you do to better manage that? And because I can’t take you with me to Mackinac Island, I want to giveaway a couple copies of the ebook I wrote that’s set on the island. Consider it a vacation in a book. You can learn more about Deadly Secrets on Mackinac Island here.

  1. I’m retired so work is chores. I can listen while I work on them.
When I was working, I had to punch a click. They didn’t allow overtime.

  2. I’m always afraid to travel without my laptop ~ just in case I need it. But I DO NOT power it up unless a true need arises. I love vacations and have no problem doing nothing 😉

  3. I am not currently working. I use to be a school counselor, so that gave me a lot of time off in the summer. I enjoyed my time off and traveled.

  5. I am retired, so walking away from work was quite some time ago. However, now I read/review for quite a number of authors, publishers, etc. so I guess I am still working. When I have a number of deadlines, walking away just doesn’t happen. So I take advantage of the times when I have done a better job of spacing those deadlines and go to the ocean to relax and enjoy the view.
I loved Mackinac Island when we visited a few years ago and certainly would love to return. Looking forward to enjoying another of your suspense novels 😊.

  6. I do find it hard to walk away…..R.N. everybody is desperate to fill their own home care shifts. I have to say NO….my own story involves saying NO 25 years ago when my own husband died, saying NO allowed me to have a lovely last day with him. Best decision ever. Married again for 18 yrs……still work hard but say no…..and YES sometimes as for upcoming event that involves going above and beyond as a nurse (in my opinion)

  7. I’m retired but home chores are still there. The island looks beautiful! I will be adding it to my bucket list.

  8. Glad you were able to unplug for a time. Mackinaw is one of my favorite places. My husband and I stayed at Grand Hotel one time as a treat fro my birthday. And the fudge is marvelous. I hope to back one day.
