Today I want to introduce you to a book I’ve thoroughly enjoyed, but be sure to read to the end, because I’m celebrating my birthday with a book giveaway smorgasbord. It’s my birthday, but you get the gifts. Just continue to the end to see which 3 I’m giving away.
I love Jen Turano’s books for those times I want a fun, light historical romance. There is often a mystery interwoven in them, and this one is no different.  In Playing the Part Lucetta Plum is an actress who has no use for men. She’s been taking care of herself since she was 13 and plans to do that until she dies. The fact that she’s famous and wealthy doesn’t hurt, until it leads a man to take an unnatural attraction to her. Bram Haverstein is a man of means who is nothing less than eccentric and a collector of those animals and people others don’t want. The two are thrown together and the tension erupts in humorous dialogue and situations with a shadow of danger. Both have secrets, some more serious than others, but in the end what draws them together is more than the secrets that try to keep them apart.
Playing the Part, like Jen’s other novels, is a positive romp through the pages. Because it’s the third in a series, if you’ve read the first two, you will thoroughly enjoy seeing the prior heroes and heroines make appearance on stage. Abigail and Archibald are back with a fun twist, and there’s a host of new characters that add light and life to the book. These books are plain Gilded Age fun and the intrigue and danger stays on the light side while the romance is amped up.
I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and think those who love historicals with fun and intrigue will as well.

Lucetta, who has no interest in Abigail’s matchmaking machinations, has the best intentions of remaining cordial but coolly distant to Bram. But when she can’t ignore the strange and mysterious things going on in his house, it’ll take more than good intentions to keep her from trying to discover who Bram is behind the part he plays.

My best b-day gift ever… Any time I get books. 🙂 One particularly memorable birthday was my ninth, when I got this cool gypsy wagon Polly Pocket and The Baby-Sitter’s Club Mystery #1. That book is still one of my favorites of the entire series, and that Polly Pocket was one of my favorites to play with in the years that followed that special day. Yes, I still have it.

I have to say that the most special gift was a ring that my mom gave me a few years ago. As she entered her 60’s, she quit wearing much jewelry and decided to give my sister and I a gift of a piece of her jewelry from her personal collection. She didn’t even realize how special that ring was to me, but when I opened it the childhood memories flooded back and I just lost it emotionally. It was a ring that I had always remembered her wearing and would always associate with my childhood and my relationship with my mom.
